Orphan River: Water Management of the Kabul River Basin in Afghanistan and Pakistan is a report researched and written by MiCT journalists and editors in collaboration with experts from the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).

The report brought together more than a dozen experienced Afghan and Pakistani journalists to report on their countries’ shared waters. In Pakistan, MiCT reporters travelled from the glaciers of Chitral to deltas in Baluchistan. In Afghanistan, our contributors dug up century-old international agreements, sourced the latest data, hunted down maps and travelled to all four corners of the country.

Our contributors and editors in both Afghanistan and Pakistan spoke to several high-ranking officials in relevant ministries as well as dozens of local, provincial and national water stakeholders to get a clearer picture of the region’s unchartered waters.
